The Kenya Dairy Board has reassured consumers that milk remains available in the market despite temporary supply constraints being experienced in parts of the country.
The Board said formal milk deliveries to processors declined by 3.7 per cent, from 84.4 million litres in June 2026 to 81.3 million litres in July 2026.
It is currently compiling formal milk intake figures for August, with preliminary indications pointing to a further decline due to prevailing seasonal production conditions.
Recent market surveillance by the Board has found low milk stocks, reduced availability of some brands and pack sizes, and delayed replenishment in some outlets.
Pasteurised milk has been the most affected, while ESL and UHT long-life milk remains comparatively more available.
Despite the supply constraints, retail milk prices have generally remained stable, although some parts of the country have recorded price increases.
The Board attributed the situation largely to seasonal factors, particularly dry and cold weather conditions in key milk-producing areas, which have affected pasture and fodder availability.
However, the outlook could improve during the October-November-December 2026 rainfall season, which is expected to boost pasture and fodder availability and support recovery in milk production.
The government is also implementing measures aimed at strengthening the dairy value chain, including the procurement and distribution of milk coolers to improve milk aggregation and preservation, as well as support for dairy herd improvement through subsidised sexed semen.
KDB Managing Director Dr William Maritim said the Board was continuing to monitor milk production, formal deliveries to processors, market availability and retail prices while working with industry stakeholders to ensure continuity of supply.
The Board said the current supply constraints are temporary and that measures being implemented are expected to contribute to increased production and more stable milk supplies.
