    Early Life

Tom Scholz was born Donald Thomas Scholz on March 10, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Ottawa Hills. His father, Don Scholz, was a successful home builder who founded Scholz Design, a company known for pioneering prefabricated luxury home designs.

Scholz showed early talent in both music and engineering. He studied classical piano as a child and enjoyed designing and building mechanical devices. While attending Ottawa Hills High School, he also played on the varsity basketball team.

After graduating in 1965, Scholz enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. Following his studies, he worked as a senior product design engineer at Polaroid.

    Founding Boston

While studying at MIT, Scholz began writing songs and collaborating with musicians such as Barry Goudreau and Jim Masdea. After graduating, he built a recording studio in his basement where he spent years producing demo recordings.

Initially, record companies rejected his work. However, a final batch of demos—featuring future hits like More Than a Feeling and Peace of Mind—caught the attention of Epic Records.

Scholz and vocalist Brad Delp signed with the label, forming the original Boston lineup with additional members Barry Goudreau, Fran Sheehan, and Sib Hashian.

    Boston’s Success

Boston released its self-titled debut album in 1976, which became one of the best-selling debut albums in U.S. history. The album produced several classic rock hits, including:

    • “More Than a Feeling”
    • “Peace of Mind”
    • “Foreplay/Long Time”

The band followed with the successful album Don’t Look Back in 1978, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts and was certified 7× Platinum.

Boston continued its success with Third Stage, which also topped the charts and featured the No. 1 single Amanda.

    Later albums included:

    • Walk On (1994)
    • Corporate America (2002)
    • Life, Love & Hope (2013)

Following the death of Brad Delp in 2007, Boston continued touring with new vocalist Tommy DeCarlo.

    Scholz Research & Development

In 1980, Scholz founded Scholz Research & Development, a company focused on developing music technology.

One of its most famous inventions was the Rockman headphone guitar amplifier, which became extremely popular among guitarists in the 1980s. The company also produced professional signal-processing equipment and guitar effects systems.

However, as digital audio technology became more common in the 1990s, the company eventually ceased operations.

    Philanthropy

In 1987, Scholz established the DTS Charitable Foundation, which supports several humanitarian causes. The organization works to:

    • Protect animals
    • Combat global hunger
    • Support children’s rights
    • Create shelters and food banks for the homeless

    Personal Life

Scholz married his first wife, Cynthia Hartford, in 1971, and they had a son named Jeremy before divorcing. In 2007, he married Kim Hart, and the couple resides in the Boston, Massachusetts area.
