    Trevor van Riemsdyk, often referred to by his initials TVR, is an American professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL).

    Born on July 24, 1991, in Middletown, New Jersey, he stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs around 187 pounds.

    He shoots right-handed and has built a reputation as a steady, reliable blueliner known for his skating, puck-moving ability, and defensive positioning.

    Van Riemsdyk went undrafted but earned his way into the league through strong college play and has enjoyed a solid NHL career spanning more than a decade.

    Trevor’s older brother James van Riemsdyk is a longtime NHL forward, most notably with the Philadelphia Flyers and later the Detroit Red Wings, among other teams.

    James was selected second overall by the Flyers in the 2007 NHL Draft and has had a successful career as a goal-scoring winger.

    The youngest brother, Brendan van Riemsdyk, played college hockey at the University of New Hampshire before transferring to Northeastern University and also had a professional career in hockey.

    The three brothers grew up in a hockey-centric household in New Jersey, with parents Frans and Allison van Riemsdyk fostering their passion for the game through backyard and outdoor rink play.

    Career

    Van Riemsdyk began his hockey journey at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey, before joining the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs in the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL), where he excelled and won championships.

    He then played three seasons of college hockey at the University of New Hampshire in the Hockey East conference.

    His sophomore year in 2012-13 stood out, as he earned All-Hockey East First Team honors and was named an AHCA East First-Team All-American while posting strong offensive numbers from the blue line.

    He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks in March 2014.

    Van Riemsdyk made his NHL debut in October 2014 and contributed to the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup victory in his rookie season, appearing in four playoff games during the 2015 Finals.

    After additional seasons in Chicago, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft but was quickly traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, where he spent three seasons and played in the playoffs.

    In 2020, he signed with the Washington Capitals as a free agent and has since become a key part of their defensive corps, signing multiple extensions and reaching career offensive highs in recent seasons while providing consistent minutes.

    Throughout his career, van Riemsdyk has faced and overcome injuries but has maintained longevity, playing in over 750 NHL regular-season games.

    He has also represented the United States internationally at the IIHF World Championship.

    Accolades

    Van Riemsdyk’s most notable achievement is winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 during his rookie season.

    In college, he earned significant individual recognition, including All-Hockey East Rookie Team honors in 2012, All-Hockey East First Team in 2013, and AHCA East First-Team All-American status in 2013.

    He has also served as the You Can Play ambassador for the Capitals, supporting initiatives to promote inclusivity and eliminate homophobia in sports.
