Two Arrested as Police Recover Over 900 Stolen Phones in Nairobi CBD

Detectives from Nairobi Central Sub-County have arrested two suspects believed to be part of an inter-country mobile phone theft syndicate, following the recovery of more than 900 stolen mobile phones in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted along Charles Rubia Street near the busy Buscar bus stage. During the operation, detectives intercepted two parcels that were being prepared for transport to Uganda. A search of the packages revealed a large cache of stolen mobile phones.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network involved in stealing mobile phones from unsuspecting members of the public as well as from mobile phone shops, before smuggling the devices to neighbouring countries for resale.

The two suspects, identified as Brian Yomasia and Stephen Okwachi Shisia, were unable to give a satisfactory explanation regarding possession of the phones. They were arrested and taken to Nairobi Central Police Station, where they are being processed ahead of their arraignment in court.

The recovery comes barely days after another major breakthrough on January 24, 2026, in which detectives recovered over 150 stolen mobile phones during a separate operation.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating mobile phone theft through sustained intelligence-driven operations across the country.

Members of the public are encouraged to report criminal activity anonymously via the DCI toll-free line 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.
