Two children are feared to have died after a fire swept through a residential compound in Bulapesa, Isiolo County, destroying 17 timber rooms and a three-bedroom permanent house.
The fire broke out at around 11am on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the home of a woman.
Police said officers from Kulamawe Police Station, together with the Isiolo County fire brigade and Kenya Red Cross personnel, rushed to the scene in an attempt to contain the blaze.
Two bodies, suspected to be those of one, aged three, and the other, aged about one year and six months, were recovered from the remains of the buildings.
The children are believed to have been staying at the compound with their mother, who was a tenant at the residence.
The bodies were burnt beyond recognition and were taken to Isiolo Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending identification and postmortem examination.
Property whose value had not immediately been established was also destroyed in the inferno.
Police said the cause of the fire had not been established by the time of filing the report.
The Isiolo County Crime Scene Investigation team processed and documented the scene as detectives commenced investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal fire.
Meanwhile, a 60-year-old man died while being rushed to hospital after he was allegedly assaulted during a dispute at a miraa-chewing session in Marsabit County.
Kulimicha Okuro Rendile succumbed to injuries on Friday, September 4, 2026, while being escorted to Marsabit County Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police said the two men got into a disagreement that escalated into a physical altercation, during which Rendile sustained injuries.
Friends who were present intervened and managed to calm the situation before separating the two men, who subsequently went their separate ways.
However, Rendile’s condition later deteriorated. Neighbours attempted to take him to Marsabit County Referral Hospital at about 1:30pm, but he died on the way to the facility.
A team comprising officers from Marsabit Central Sub-County, the Deputy Officer Commanding Station and the County Crime Scene Investigation unit visited the scene.
The body was moved to the Marsabit County Referral Hospital mortuary, where police observed bruises on the right side of the back and right elbow.
Crime Scene Investigation officers processed and documented the scene, while the body was preserved pending an autopsy.
Police have classified the case as murder and handed it to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Marsabit Central Sub-County.
Efforts to trace and arrest the suspect were underway, according to police.
