Two children aged two and four years died after a fire broke out in their room at Mbumbuni Market, Makueni County.

The incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026. A tenant alerted authorities after noticing smoke emanating from one of the rooms..

Police said they found that the two children had perished in the fire.

The children’s mother who works as a casual employee at Kisau Hospital, had reportedly left them alone in the house and locked the door.

She returned to find that the fire had already consumed the room and killed her children.

Police processed the scene and moved the bodies to Tawa Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending postmortem examinations.

The mother was taken into police custody for further questioning as investigations into the cause of the fire continued.

Meanwhile, police in Khwisero, Kakamega County, arrested a 20-year-old man following the suspected poisoning and death of a two-year-old boy at Emusoto Village.

A woman aged 23 told authorities that her son developed severe vomiting shortly after being served tea by her boyfriend at their home on Wednesday, September 9.

The child was rushed to Khwisero Level 1V Hospital for treatment but died while undergoing treatment.

Police visited the scene at Emusoto Village, Emalindi Sub-location, in Kisa South Location, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police said the child was suspected to have been poisoned following a disagreement between the suspect and the mother over the child’s paternity.

The man was arrested and remained in police custody as investigations continued.

The scene was processed and documented, while the child’s body was moved to Sonak Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
