Police in Igambang’ombe Sub-County have launched investigations following a deadly night attack at a homestead in the Kamwimbi area that left two people dead and two others seriously injured.

According to police, a group of about six armed men stormed the home of a woman at around 7pm on Thursday May 21 and caused chaos before attacking the occupants.

Police said the gang, allegedly armed with a firearm and crude weapons, first attacked and fatally injured David Muchiri, 32, at the entrance to the homestead.

The assailants reportedly fired several gunshots into the air to scare away residents before proceeding into the house where they fatally attacked Deborah Muthoni Nyagah, 68.

Two other victims survived the attack with serious injuries. The gang escaped after the incident and remained at large by Thursday night.

The injured victims were rushed to Chuka General Referral Hospital where they were admitted for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were preserved at the same facility’s mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

The motive of the attack was not immediately known, police said amid investigations.

And an operation to recover stolen livestock in Igembe Central Sub-County turned tragic after a National Police Reservist (NPR) officer was shot dead during a confrontation with suspected bandits.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at around 3:43pm in the Ntomithea Dam area of Rikiau when a team of police officers and NPR officers pursuing stolen livestock came under ambush.

The officers reportedly encountered about 11 suspected bandits armed with firearms and other weapons while tracing the stolen animals. A fierce exchange of gunfire followed.

During the shootout, NPR officer John Karithi Kanyaru sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and left hand. He was rushed to Guardian Hospital Kangeta where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said about 40 cows and 20 goats believed to have been stolen were successfully recovered during the operation and later collected by their owners, who had joined the pursuit.

The deceased officer’s G3 rifle was recovered at the scene and handed over to another NPR officer.

Authorities from Kenya Police Service have launched further operations to pursue the attackers and restore security in the area.
