Two people were Monday shot dead and several police officers injured following a violent confrontation between protesters and security officers in Ramula area, Gem Yala Sub-county, Siaya County.

The incident occurred on Monday when a large group of youths—estimated at about 2,000—reportedly marched towards Ramula Police Post in an unlawful demonstration targeting the operations of Shanta Gold.

There were reports an investor wants to invest in the mining business there.

According to police, the group, said to include individuals from Luanda in neighboring Vihiga County and local artisanal miners, had mobilized through social media before staging road blockades across the area.

The situation quickly escalated when the protesters stormed the police post, pelting officers with stones and overpowering those on duty.

In the ensuing chaos, the attackers vandalized the facility, smashing windows, damaging police vehicles, and attempting to set the administration block on fire. Authorities say a half-litre bottle of petrol and a matchbox—suspected to have been intended for arson—were recovered outside the report office.

Police responded by firing tear gas in an effort to disperse the crowd, but were reportedly overwhelmed by the sheer number of demonstrators. During the confrontation, two unidentified male protesters were fatally shot within the police compound.

Several officers sustained injuries during the attack and were treated at Ramula Dispensary before being discharged in fair condition.

Security agencies have since deployed additional reinforcements to the area, with tensions reportedly remaining high as investigations into the incident begin.

The unrest highlights growing tensions between local communities and mining operations in the region, with authorities urging calm as efforts to restore order continue.

Gold mining business has become thorny and emotive in many areas amid growing demand.
