A tragic family incident in Rachuonyo North Sub-County, Homa Bay County, left two young children dead, two others injured, and their mother dead in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide.
The incident was reported on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Kon’gonge Village, Kayoo West Sub-location, Kakdhimu West Location.
Police officers visited the scene and established that a 31-year-old woman, identified as Veronicah Anyango, allegedly locked her four children inside their house before setting it on fire.
She was later found dead after apparently hanging herself from a tree near the home.
Two children aged two years, and one-year-old, died in the blaze. Their bodies were severely burnt.
Two other children, aged seven and five, survived after a neighbour, reportedly heard their screams and managed to open the door, rescuing them from the burning house.
The injured children were rushed to Kandiege Sub-County Referral Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had reportedly been involved in a domestic dispute with her husband over allegations of an extramarital relationship.
Crime scene investigators documented and photographed the scene before the bodies were moved to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Meanwhile, police in Mt Elgon Sub-County, Bungoma County, have launched investigations into the killing of a 17-year-old boy who was found with severe injuries in Kaptama Location.
The victim, a resident of Gituamba Division in Sabaot Sub-County, Trans Nzoia County, is reported to have been assaulted by unknown individuals at Sacharaan Village at an unknown time on Sunday morning.
According to a report made at Kaptama Police Station, information about the incident was received at around 1 p.m. on May 31, 2026.
Police officers from Kaptama Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Mt Elgon, visited the scene and commenced investigations.
Preliminary findings revealed that the teenager sustained serious injuries to the right side of the head, abdomen, both hands and the back. He succumbed to the injuries.
Investigators said the motive behind the attack has not yet been established and no arrests had been reported by the time of filing the report.
The body was moved to Kimilili Sannte Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police have classified the case as a murder and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Such incidents have been on the rise and police link them to society trauma.
