Ellen Tyne Daly was born on February 21, 1946, in Madison, Wisconsin, to actor parents James Daly and Mary Hope Daly. She grew up in Rockland County, New York, alongside her three siblings, including her brother Tim Daly, who is also a successful actor best known for his roles in Wings and Madam Secretary.

Daly’s passion for acting was nurtured early—she was just 15 when she received her Equity Card to perform in summer stock theatre productions. She later pursued her education at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and further honed her craft at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.

    Career

Daly made her television debut in 1954 in Foreign Intrigue. By the late 1960s, she was guest-starring on shows such as General Hospital, The Virginian, The Mod Squad, and Judd, for the Defense. Her first major film role was in John and Mary (1969), followed by appearances in Angel Unchained (1970), Play It As It Lays (1972), and Clint Eastwood’s The Enforcer (1976), where she played Inspector Kate Moore.

Her breakthrough came in 1982 when she was cast as Detective Mary Beth Lacey in Cagney & Lacey. The show ran for seven seasons, producing 125 episodes and four television movies, and Daly’s role as a tough yet relatable detective earned her four Primetime Emmy Awards.

She continued to shine in both television and film, with notable credits including Zoot Suit (1981), The Aviator (1985), Movers & Shakers (1985), and The Autumn Heart (1999). From 1999 to 2005, she starred in the legal drama Judging Amy, playing Maxine Gray, a role that earned her six Emmy nominations and another win.

In addition to her screen work, Daly has enjoyed a celebrated stage career. She starred in Gypsy (1989), earning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, and appeared in productions of Rabbit Hole (2006), Master Class (2011), Mothers and Sons (2014), and It Shoulda Been You (2015).

Daly also embraced roles in modern cinema, appearing in Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). She remained active on television with appearances in Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Madam Secretary, and the Murphy Brown revival.
