    Uganda Orders Immediate Border Closure

    On the morning of Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the Ugandan government announced the closure of its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and any person returning from the DRC into Uganda shall undergo mandatory self-isolation for 21 days

    Exceptions to the Closure

    The border is not completely sealed. According to official Ugandan sources, cross-border movement is still permitted only for:

    • Emergency medical cases
    • Ebola response personnel and equipment
    • Security operations
    • Cargo and commercial goods transport

    All other travel is suspended until further notice.

    What Triggered the Decision

    Health officials reported that Ugandan medical workers were directly exposed to the Ebola virus by Congolese nationals who crossed into Uganda before the outbreak was officially declared. That exposure, combined with rising case counts, led to the immediate border action.
