British authorities have reportedly denied Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema a visa to attend the upcoming Cambridge Conference in the UK, scheduled for this weekend.

Malema made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), alleging that he received no substantial explanation for the visa denial.

“It is clear to me that this is an attempt to silence a dissenting political perspective,” Malema posted. “We are currently at the OR airport, as we were promised that everything would be sorted by 15:30. Instead, we received a regret letter just four hours before our departure. This is unacceptable and spineless.”

The incident has sparked debate over whether the decision was politically motivated, given Malema’s outspoken stance on global issues. The EFF leader was set to participate in discussions at the prestigious Cambridge Conference, known for featuring a diverse range of global thought leaders.

The Citizen has reached out to the British High Commission in Pretoria for a response. Their comment will be added once received.
