He pursued his education at St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta, before interning at Hoechst AG in the United States. His career took a significant turn in 1983, when, at the age of 28, he took over as Chairman of United Breweries Group (UB Group) following his father’s demise.
Under his leadership, UB Group grew into a conglomerate of more than 60 companies, with interests in diverse sectors such as alcohol, aviation, chemicals, and engineering. The company’s flagship beer, Kingfisher, became India’s most popular beer brand.
The Rise of United Breweries
Mallya played a crucial role in expanding the global footprint of United Spirits Ltd. (USL). The company achieved a historic milestone by selling over 100 million cases, making it the second-largest spirits company in the world by volume. However, in 2012, Mallya ceded management control of USL to global liquor giant Diageo, marking the beginning of a shift in his business empire.
Beyond spirits, he was also Chairman of United National Breweries and had business interests in life sciences, information technology, and agriculture.
Entry into Aviation and Downfall
In 2005, Mallya ventured into the aviation sector by launching Kingfisher Airlines, which aimed to be India’s premier luxury airline. Despite its ambitious start, Kingfisher Airlines faced mounting losses and was eventually grounded in 2012 due to financial difficulties. The airline’s collapse led to Mallya defaulting on loans worth ₹9,000 crore, triggering legal actions against him.
Formula One and Sporting Ventures
Mallya also made a name for himself in Formula One. In 2007, he co-purchased the Spyker F1 team and later renamed it Force India F1, which competed in the sport for several years before facing financial troubles.
