    Career

Backlund rose to prominence in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), later known as the World Wrestling Federation. With his clean-cut “All-American” image and elite technical ability, he became the company’s top star during a transitional era in wrestling.

He held the WWWF Heavyweight Championship for more than five years—one of the longest title reigns in wrestling history—establishing himself as a symbol of discipline, consistency, and in-ring excellence.

After stepping away during the rise of Hulk Hogan and the boom period of the 1980s, Backlund made a surprising return in the 1990s with a completely reinvented persona as the eccentric “Mr. Backlund,” showcasing his adaptability in a changing industry.

    Early Life

Born Robert Louis Backlund on August 14, 1949, in Princeton, Minnesota, Backlund grew up in a rural environment and faced early life challenges. His path changed when a coach encouraged him to pursue amateur wrestling.

    He attended:

    • Princeton High School
    • Waldorf College
    • North Dakota State University

At North Dakota State, he became a standout athlete, winning the 1971 NCAA Division II national championship in wrestling and earning a degree in physical education.

    Early Professional Career

Backlund trained under Eddie Sharkey and made his professional debut in 1973. He competed across multiple territories, including:

    • American Wrestling Association
    • National Wrestling Alliance

During this period, he won several regional championships, building a reputation as a technically skilled and disciplined competitor.

    Historic WWWF/WWF Championship Run

Backlund’s career reached its peak when he joined the WWWF in the late 1970s under promoter Vince McMahon Sr..

On February 20, 1978, he defeated Superstar Billy Graham at Madison Square Garden to win the WWWF Heavyweight Championship.

    Key highlights:

    • Held the title for 2,135 days (over five years)
    • Won the WWF Tag Team Championship with Pedro Morales
    • Represented the company as its top “good guy” champion

His reign ended in 1983 when The Iron Sheik defeated him after his manager Arnold Skaaland stopped the match. This moment marked the shift toward the Hulk Hogan era.

    Return and “Mr. Backlund” Persona

Backlund returned in the early 1990s and reinvented himself as the eccentric and unpredictable “Mr. Backlund.” The character, known for strict moral views and erratic behavior, became one of the most memorable villains of the decade.

In 1994, he shocked fans by defeating Bret Hart at the Survivor Series to win his second WWF Championship.

Although he lost the title shortly after to Diesel, the victory remains one of wrestling’s most unlikely comebacks.

    Later Career

Backlund continued making appearances in wrestling throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, including international matches and independent promotions. He also returned to WWE for special appearances and brief managerial roles, including working with Kurt Angle.

In 2013, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, cementing his place among wrestling’s all-time greats.

    Personal Life

Backlund married his wife Corki in 1967, and the couple has one daughter. Known for his disciplined lifestyle, he has maintained a strong commitment to physical fitness throughout his life.

In 2015, he released his autobiography, “Backlund: From All-American Boy to Professional Wrestling’s World Champion,” offering insight into his journey and philosophy.
