Bruce Willis has an estimated net worth of $250 million. The retired American actor, producer, and musician was for decades one of the highest-paid leading men in Hollywood.

Throughout his career, Willis earned hundreds of millions of dollars in film salaries. One of his biggest paydays came from the thriller The Sixth Sense, where he earned about $114 million in total thanks to a profit-sharing deal. His upfront salary for the movie was $14 million, with the rest coming from a percentage of the film’s box-office earnings.

Willis rose to fame in the 1980s through television before becoming a major action star. He is widely known for his role as John McClane in the Die Hard series. Over the years, he also starred in blockbuster films such as Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, Armageddon, Unbreakable, Sin City, and The Fifth Element.

Later in his career, Willis also appeared in franchises like RED, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and The Expendables.

    Early Life

Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, which was part of West Germany at the time. His father was an American soldier, while his mother worked as a bank teller.

As a child, Willis moved to Penns Grove, New Jersey, where he grew up and attended high school.

After graduating, he worked several jobs, including as a security guard at a nuclear power plant and later as a driver transporting workers at a DuPont factory. He also briefly worked as a private investigator before deciding to pursue acting.

Willis studied drama at Montclair State University, but left during his junior year to focus on acting in New York City. During this period, he worked as a bartender while auditioning for roles and appeared as an extra in The Verdict, which starred Paul Newman.

    Breakthrough With “Moonlighting”

Willis’ major breakthrough came in 1985 when he was cast as David Addison Jr. in the television series Moonlighting, starring alongside Cybill Shepherd.

The show ran from 1985 to 1989 and made Willis an international star. His performance earned him both a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

During the show’s popularity, Willis also signed a major endorsement deal with Seagram’s Golden Wine Cooler. He reportedly earned $7 million over two years from the campaign, equivalent to roughly $17 million today when adjusted for inflation.

    “Die Hard” and Action Stardom

Willis cemented his Hollywood status when he starred as John McClane in Die Hard.

The film became one of the most influential action movies ever made and launched a major franchise. Willis earned increasing salaries with each installment:

    • $5 million for Die Hard (1988)
    • $7.5 million for Die Hard 2 (1990)
    • $15 million for Die Hard with a Vengeance
    • $25 million for Live Free or Die Hard

In total, Willis earned at least $52 million from the franchise before adjusting for inflation.

    Career Highlights

Although Willis experienced some less successful films in the early 1990s, including Hudson Hawk and Color of Night, his career rebounded with Pulp Fiction, directed by Quentin Tarantino.

He accepted a much smaller salary of $800,000 for the role, but the film revitalized his career and reestablished him as a reliable box-office star.

Willis continued to earn critical praise in 12 Monkeys, while films like Armageddon and The Sixth Sense became major commercial successes. The Sixth Sense alone earned $673 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful films of his career.

    Television Appearances and Awards

Aside from film, Willis occasionally returned to television with guest appearances on shows such as:

    • Mad About You
    • Ally McBeal
    • Friends
    • That ’70s Show

Throughout his career, he won two Emmy Awards, one Golden Globe, and two People’s Choice Awards.

    Personal Life

Willis married actress Demi Moore in 1987. The couple had three daughters — Rumer Willis, Scout Willis, and Tallulah Willis — before divorcing in 2000. Their divorce settlement reportedly totaled $90 million.

In 2009, Willis married model Emma Heming Willis, and the couple has two daughters together.

Despite their divorce, Willis and Moore have maintained a friendly relationship over the years.

    Health and Retirement

In 2022, Willis announced his retirement from acting after being diagnosed with Aphasia.

In February 2023, his family later revealed that he had been diagnosed with Frontotemporal dementia, a condition affecting behavior, language, and personality.

At the time of his retirement, he had several films completed and awaiting release.

    Real Estate

Over the years, Willis has owned multiple luxury properties around the world.

In 1990, he and Demi Moore purchased a 7,000-square-foot penthouse in the San Remo overlooking Central Park. Moore later sold the apartment for $45 million in 2017.

Willis also owned homes in Beverly Hills, California, Turks and Caicos, Brentwood, Los Angeles, Idaho, and New York.

One of his most notable properties was a 7.4-acre beachfront estate in Turks and Caicos, which sold for about $27 million.

    Bruce Willis Salary Per Movie

At the peak of his career, Willis consistently earned eight-figure salaries per film.

Some of his notable paychecks include:

    • $10 million for Look Who’s Talking
    • $14 million for The Last Boy Scout
    • $14.8 million for Armageddon
    • $20 million each for The Kid and Unbreakable

Thanks to these deals, Willis often earned $20 million or more per year, even with relatively limited work.
