Early Life
Larry David was born Lawrence Gene David on July 2, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York City. He grew up in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood in a middle-class Jewish family.
His father, Morty David, worked as a clothing manufacturer, while his mother, Rose David, was a homemaker.
David attended Sheepshead Bay High School and later studied history at University of Maryland, graduating in 1970. After college, he briefly served in the United States Army Reserve.
Before finding success in entertainment, David worked several jobs, including limousine driver, store clerk, and television repairman, while performing stand-up comedy in New York clubs.
“Seinfeld” Syndication Earnings
The majority of Larry David’s wealth comes from his role in creating Seinfeld, which he developed with fellow comedian Jerry Seinfeld.
When the show premiered in 1989 on NBC, David and Seinfeld each owned 7.5% of the show’s backend equity. As the series grew in popularity during the 1990s, they renegotiated their contract, increasing their ownership to 15% each.
When the show entered syndication in 1998, the first licensing deal generated about $1.7 billion in revenue, giving both creators a pre-tax payout of roughly $250 million.
Over the following decades, the sitcom continued to generate massive earnings through international syndication, DVDs, and merchandise. By 2013, total syndication revenue had surpassed $3 billion, and by 2026, overall earnings connected to the series reached around $5 billion.
Major streaming deals also boosted the show’s value, including:
- A 2015 streaming deal with Hulu worth about $180 million
- A 2019 global streaming agreement with Netflix valued at $500 million
Because of his ownership stake, Larry David has reportedly earned around $800 million from Seinfeld through salaries, royalties, streaming rights, and licensing deals.

Early Television Work
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, David began shifting from stand-up comedy to television writing. In 1980, he joined the cast and writing team of the ABC sketch comedy show Fridays, which ran until 1982. One of his fellow cast members was Michael Richards, who later starred in Seinfeld.
David also worked briefly as a writer on Saturday Night Live during the 1984–1985 season. His tenure there was short, and only one of his sketches aired. However, many of his experiences during that time later inspired storylines in Seinfeld.
While writing for SNL, he also worked alongside cast member Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who would later play Elaine Benes on Seinfeld.
Creation of “Seinfeld”
In 1988, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld began developing a sitcom based on Seinfeld’s stand-up routines and everyday observations. The show, originally titled “The Seinfeld Chronicles,” debuted in 1989 on NBC.
The series followed four friends living in New York City and became famous for its unconventional concept as “a show about nothing.”
David served as head writer and executive producer, writing or co-writing 62 episodes. The character George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander, was largely based on David’s own personality and experiences.
Seinfeld ran for nine seasons (1989–1998) and is widely regarded as one of the most influential sitcoms in television history. David left the show after season seven in 1996, but he returned to write the series finale.
“Curb Your Enthusiasm”
After leaving Seinfeld, David returned to television in 2000 with the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm. The show began as an HBO special before being developed into a full series.
In the show, David plays a fictionalized version of himself, often getting into awkward social situations in Los Angeles. The series became known for its improvisational format, where actors work from outlines rather than full scripts.
The show has featured numerous celebrity guest appearances and has become one of HBO’s longest-running comedy series. David also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for his role.
Film and Other Projects
In addition to television, David has worked in film and theater. In 1998, he wrote and directed the dark comedy Sour Grapes.
He later co-wrote and starred in the HBO movie Clear History (2013).
In 2015, David made his Broadway debut with the play Fish in the Dark, which opened at Cort Theatre and became one of the highest-grossing productions in Broadway history.
Personal Life
Larry David married Laurie David (Laurie Lennard) in 1993. They had two daughters:
- Cazzie David
- Romy David
Laurie filed for divorce in 2007, and reports indicate that Larry gave her around half of his fortune, estimated at $200–300 million, along with a share of future royalties from his television projects.
In 2020, Larry married Ashley Underwood.
Genealogical research featured on Finding Your Roots later revealed that David is distantly related to U.S. senator Bernie Sanders. David even portrayed Sanders during guest appearances on Saturday Night Live.
FTX Commercial
In 2022, David appeared in a Super Bowl commercial promoting the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. He reportedly received $10 million for the advertisement.
After the company collapsed amid fraud allegations involving founder Sam Bankman-Fried, the commercial became widely discussed and criticized.
Real Estate
Larry David owns several luxury properties in Los Angeles, particularly in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. He has bought and sold multiple homes there, including properties worth more than $10 million.
In 2022, he purchased a home in Montecito, California for about $5.7 million, later selling it for $6.9 million. He also bought another Montecito mansion for $7.6 million the same year.
