    Patricia Lea Jenkins was born on July 24, 1971, at an Air Force base in Victorville, California. Her father was a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who served in the Vietnam War, and her mother worked as an environmental scientist for the Environmental Protection Agency.

    After her father’s death when she was seven, Jenkins and her family eventually settled in Washington, D.C. She later attended The Cooper Union in New York City, graduating in 1993 with a degree in painting.

    Breakthrough With Monster

    Jenkins wrote and directed her first feature film, Monster, in 2003.

    The biographical crime drama starred Charlize Theron* as serial killer Aileen Wuornos. The film received critical acclaim and numerous award nominations, including recognition at the Berlin International Film Festival and Independent Spirit Awards.

    Monster established Jenkins as a serious filmmaker capable of handling complex, character-driven stories.
