Broderick Stephen Harvey was born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia. He later moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from Glenville High School in 1974. Harvey attended Kent State University and West Virginia University, working a variety of jobs including boxer, autoworker, carpet cleaner, mailman, and insurance salesman.
Harvey’s first stand-up performance was on October 8, 1985, at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland. During his early career, he faced significant hardships, including being homeless for three years, often sleeping in his 1976 Ford when hotel accommodations were unavailable.
