Early Life

Jerry Richardson was born on July 11, 1936, in Spring Hope. He later attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he excelled as a football player.

Richardson became an All-American wide receiver at Wofford and eventually earned an opportunity to play professionally in the NFL. He joined the Baltimore Colts, where he played briefly as a wide receiver.

One of the defining moments of Richardson’s early life came after the Colts won the 1959 NFL Championship. He reportedly received a $4,744 bonus check, which would later become the seed money for his future business empire.

Building Wealth Through Fast Food

Instead of spending his championship bonus, Richardson invested it in what became the country’s first franchised Hardee’s restaurant.

Partnering with former college teammate Charlie Bradshaw, Richardson helped establish what eventually became Flagstar Foods, a restaurant management company that expanded aggressively over several decades.

Under Richardson’s leadership, Flagstar Foods grew into one of the largest restaurant operators in America, controlling around 2,500 restaurants and employing approximately 100,000 workers at its peak.

The company’s growth generated the majority of Richardson’s wealth and laid the financial foundation that later allowed him to pursue NFL ownership.

Founding the Carolina Panthers

Richardson made sports history when he successfully brought an NFL franchise to the Carolinas.

In 1993, the NFL unanimously awarded the Carolinas its 29th franchise, leading to the creation of the Carolina Panthers. Richardson became the first former NFL player since legendary owner George Halas to become an NFL team owner.

Richardson and a group of investors reportedly paid $206 million to secure franchise rights, with much of the funding coming directly from his own wealth.

Under Richardson’s ownership, the Panthers grew into one of the NFL’s most valuable franchises, generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue and reaching multiple playoff appearances, including trips to the Super Bowl.

Richardson became widely known within the organization by the nickname “Big Cat.”

Sale of the Carolina Panthers

In December 2017, Richardson announced plans to step away from the Panthers organization after allegations of workplace misconduct surfaced.

Soon afterward, he decided to sell the team. In 2018, billionaire hedge fund manager David Tepper purchased the Panthers for $2.275 billion, setting what was then a record price for an NFL franchise.

The sale significantly increased Richardson’s overall wealth and cemented the Panthers as one of the NFL’s premier franchises.

Health Challenges

Richardson faced major health issues throughout his later years.

He underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2002 after experiencing heart problems. In 2009, Richardson underwent a successful heart transplant, receiving a new heart after years of medical complications.

Despite his health struggles, Richardson remained closely connected to the Panthers organization and was known for rarely missing home games during his ownership tenure.

Personal Life

Jerry Richardson was married to his wife, Rosalind Sallenger Richardson, and together they had three children — Jon, Mark, and Ashley Richardson Allen — as well as several grandchildren.

The family lived primarily in Charlotte, where Richardson became a prominent business and civic figure.

Outside of football and business, Richardson was involved in charitable efforts and contributed to educational and community initiatives throughout the Carolinas.
