Jerry Richardson was born on July 11, 1936, in Spring Hope. He later attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he excelled as a football player.
Richardson became an All-American wide receiver at Wofford and eventually earned an opportunity to play professionally in the NFL. He joined the Baltimore Colts, where he played briefly as a wide receiver.
One of the defining moments of Richardson’s early life came after the Colts won the 1959 NFL Championship. He reportedly received a $4,744 bonus check, which would later become the seed money for his future business empire.
Building Wealth Through Fast Food
Instead of spending his championship bonus, Richardson invested it in what became the country’s first franchised Hardee’s restaurant.
