    Rise to Fame

Kool & the Gang initially gained traction in the early 1970s with albums like Wild and Peaceful, which produced early hits on the Billboard R&B charts. Their commercial breakthrough, however, came in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the addition of vocalist James “J.T.” Taylor.

Albums such as Ladies’ Night (1979) and Celebrate! (1980) propelled the group to international fame. The single Celebration, written by Bell, became one of the most recognizable party anthems of all time, topping charts in multiple countries.

    Early Life

Ronald Nathan Bell was born on November 1, 1951, in Youngstown, Ohio. He grew up in a musical environment, influenced by jazz legends like Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, whom his father knew personally.

After relocating to New Jersey, Bell and his brother formed a band with neighborhood friends, which eventually evolved into Kool & the Gang. Their early fusion of jazz, funk, and soul laid the foundation for their later mainstream success.

    Personal Life

Bell converted to Islam in 1972 and later adopted the name Khalis Bayyan. He was a family man with 10 children and remained actively involved in music until his passing on September 9, 2020, in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In recognition of his songwriting achievements, Bell was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018 alongside his bandmates.
