A video of a woman giving birth unattended at Shalom Hospital, Athi River has caused uproar online.
The woman who was visibly in a lot of pain was wheeled in in a wheelchair.
On reaching the reception area, she was met by three nurses who were busy sipping their morning tea.
So unbothered were the caregivers that even when the mother to be pleaded with them to take interest in her case, they asked her to walk it off.
“So as I was seated waiting for my wife to be attended to, an older woman is rushed in on a wheelchair, there are three nurses on the table taking tea, they seem not to bother about the woman despite being notified it’s an emergency case, so the woman pleads with one of them ‘haki nisaidie’ one of the nurses told her to get up and walk,” the man behind the lens narrated.
The woman was in labour. The man helped her up and as they made a few steps, the woman screamed in agony. Her baby was born, unassisted.
“I helped her up with no aid from a nurse, we made about three-four steps mama akashout mtoto anaanguka then boom! Mtoto akaanguka kwa floor!” he continued.
The nurses did not come to her aid. In the video, a man in a white dust coat rushes to check on the baby that was now on the hospital floor.
The man scolds the nurses who now pretend to put on gloves as one scribble on a notebook.
Reached for comment by Nairobi News, the hospital administrator who is away on holiday was quick to note that the mother and child are doing fine.
