Police in Bumula Sub-county, Bungoma County arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old woman whose body was found at her home on Saturday afternoon.

Detectives visited the scene, where they found the body of Mercyline Naliaka Nyongesa lying face down in a pool of blood within her compound. She had sustained deep head injuries believed to have been inflicted with a blunt object.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect had returned to his parents’ home earlier that morning after reportedly being away for about nine years. Police said he was allegedly naked and behaving erratically, prompting his parents to raise an alarm.

The deceased’s husband who had responded to the alarm at his parents’ home located about 100 metres away, reportedly pursued the suspect after he fled into a nearby maize plantation.

After an unsuccessful search lasting about 30 minutes, he returned home and allegedly found the suspect leaving his compound while still naked. He then discovered his wife’s lifeless body outside their house.

A chase ensued, leading to the suspect’s arrest. Police recovered a wooden stick at the scene, which is suspected to have been used in the attack.

Investigators said the suspect appeared to be mentally unstable. He remains in police custody pending a medical assessment and subsequent court appearance.

Crime scene investigators documented and photographed the scene before the body was moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Elsewhere, police in Matungu Sub-county, Kakamega County, have launched investigations into the murder of a 28-year-old man whose body was discovered on a feeder road in Bukananachi Village.

According to police, the incident is believed to have occurred during the night of June 26 and 27, 2026, and was reported on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Richard Odhiambo Ngala, was reported missing by his family after they realized he was no longer at his usual sleeping place when they woke up at around 5:00 a.m.

After searching for him, family members found his lifeless body lying on a feeder road in Kholera Location, Namulungu Sub-location, about seven kilometres east of Harambee Police Station.

Police officers visited the scene and found the deceased with visible injuries on his back and a deep cut to the head.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Bungoma County Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
