Woodley ward residents woke up to chaos as a group of around 50 hired youths brought down stalls located between Mash Park and Harlequins Suites.

The police provided security for the youths as they took down the stalls in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

The businesses were reportedly sitting on privately owned land which has since been fenced off.

The Nairobi Regeneration team has in the past couple of months overseen the demolition of illegal structures, most of which sit on road reserves and riparian land.

In September stalls in Githurai, along Thika Road were brought down but traders have utterly refused to move their businesses. Most are worried that they will not get space to set up their businesses in town.

This year alone, the Taj Mall, South End Mall, Nakumatt Ukay and other illegal structures have been taken down as the government seeks to reclaim publicly owned land.
