A 21-year-old man died after being trapped in a gold ore crushing machine at Ntunyigi in Kuria West, Migori County.

The deceased, Alfred Kausi, was working with the crusher at about noon on Monday, August 31, 2026, when his clothes were reportedly caught by one of the machine’s moving parts.

Kausi was trapped inside the machine and sustained serious injuries to both legs and his rib cage, police and witnesses said.

Kausi was rushed to Ombo Mission Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was subsequently removed to Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination.

Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal workplace accident. Gold mining business is popular in the area and attracts many locals for a living.

There has been a surge in fatal accidents at the sites amid calls for safety measures to be put in place to address the trend.

Elsewhere, police in Kirinyaga County launched efforts to retrieve the decomposing body of an unidentified man found trapped in River Thiba.

The incident was reported after residents reported that a body had been spotted in the river in Marurumo area, Mwea West Sub-County.

Police officers rushed to the scene and found the decomposing body of an unidentified adult male trapped in the waters, lying face down.

Attempts to retrieve the body were abandoned due to darkness, with police planning to resume the operation on Tuesday with the assistance of divers.

The identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death were yet to be established.

Meanwhile, police in Etago, Kisii County, launched investigations into the murder of a 31-year-old man whose body was found along a road in Monianku area.

The body of Robert Ouhuru Omwobo was discovered on Monday morning, August 31, 2026, near the SDA Monianku Dispensary in Milango Tatu village, Monianku Sub-location.

Police officers visited the scene and found Omwobo’s body lying in a pool of blood in a supine position along the Nyamaiya–Monianku murram road.

The deceased had sustained a deep stab wound on the right side of his neck and bruises on his back.

Police said nothing was found on the deceased at the scene.

According to preliminary information, Omwobo was last seen alive at about 3pm on Sunday, when he was reportedly in good health.

The motive for the killing had not been established by the time of the report, as detectives commenced investigations to establish what led to the murder and identify those responsible.

The scene was processed and documented by investigators before the body was removed to Tabaka Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
