The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has officially assumed the chairmanship of the Inter-Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Coordination Platform, marking a crucial step in Africa’s regional integration efforts.

In a statement released on Friday, February 14, 2024, IGAD announced that its Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has taken over leadership from Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, for the 2024-2025 term.

IGAD acknowledged Dr. Touray’s leadership, noting his efforts in strengthening coordination among Africa’s regional economic blocs.

As the new chair, IGAD has outlined a strategic agenda aimed at deepening regional cooperation and enhancing Africa’s global standing.

One of its key priorities is harnessing digital innovation and artificial intelligence to drive economic growth and resilience across the continent. By leveraging advancements in AI and digital technology, IGAD seeks to unlock new opportunities for development while addressing emerging challenges.

Another major focus is strengthening ties with the African Union (AU). IGAD plans to work closely with the incoming AU Commission to ensure that Regional Economic Communities (RECs) play a more strategic role in shaping Africa’s development policies. This collaboration is expected to enhance coordination and reinforce Africa’s institutional architecture.

Promoting unity and regional coordination is also at the heart of IGAD’s agenda. The organization has pledged to foster an open-door policy, encouraging all RECs and regional mechanisms to work together in addressing shared challenges and maximizing opportunities for economic and social development. By reinforcing dialogue and collaboration, IGAD aims to create a more cohesive and effective regional framework.

Additionally, IGAD remains committed to advancing Pan-Africanism and continental integration. The organization seeks to strengthen Africa’s unity and advocate for a more integrated, peaceful, and prosperous continent that speaks with one voice on the global stage. Through these initiatives, IGAD is determined to contribute to Africa’s long-term stability, economic growth, and global competitiveness.

“In assuming this leadership role, IGAD reaffirms its commitment to diligence, cooperation, and advancing Africa’s shared development agenda. Together, Africa’s RECs and AU institutions will work to shape a more resilient and globally competitive continent,” IGAD said in its statement.
