Safaricom Hook (S-Hook) has teamed up with the Kambi Safi Community Initiative in Mathare to support local youth football development by donating kits and training equipment to four community teams.
The partnership forms part of wider efforts to empower young people through sports, mentorship, and community engagement.
Kambi Safi runs the True Colours Football Program, a grassroots initiative that mentors and trains more than 200 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18. In addition to football training, the program offers psychosocial support to children affected by trauma while promoting discipline, teamwork, confidence, and resilience among participants.
During an event held at Mcedo Beijing Grounds in Mathare, four teams — Young Cranes, Beijing Raiders, Flames FC, and True Colours FC — received football kits, balls, goalkeeper gloves, and tactical boards from S-Hook.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Kambi Safi Chairman Peter Njogu noted that partnerships centered on youth development can have a lasting impact within communities. He said creating safe and supportive spaces for young people helps them recognize their potential, develop confidence, and avoid harmful influences while pursuing positive opportunities for the future.
The initiative also complements the vision of the upcoming Safaricom Chapa Dimba tournament, which focuses on identifying and nurturing football talent across the country. Through S-Hook and Chapa Dimba, Safaricom continues to engage young people in informal settlements by encouraging them to view sports as more than recreation, but also as a possible career path and tool for community transformation.
The event further featured two entertaining 7-a-side matches involving the beneficiary teams. In the girls’ fixture, Beijing Raiders staged a comeback to defeat Flames FC 3-1, with a crucial penalty helping them level the score before sealing the win. In the boys’ encounter, dubbed the Mathare Youth Derby, Young Cranes secured a 2-0 first-half lead against True Colours FC and maintained their advantage until the final whistle.
Winning teams received trophies in recognition of their performances. The event also served as an opportunity to encourage local clubs to register for the Safaricom Chapa Dimba tournament, where teams will compete from ward level through to the national stage.
