Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has died in South Africa after a long battle with colon cancer. He has had colon cancer for the past two years and his condition rapidly deteriorated recently.

“He died this evening. The family communicated this to me,” MDC vice president Elias Mudzuri told Reuters.

His death comes just a few months before the general elections which would have seen him and his party clinch the seat for the first time. The opposition leader never gave up despite the constant beatings from the police, at least he lived to see the exit of Robert Mugabe from the presidency.
