Ten people have been arrested in Homa Bay and Kisii counties in separate operations targeting drugs and counterfeit products.
In Oyugis, Homa Bay County, two suspects were arrested during a joint operation led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), and the Administration Police Service (APS).
The raid uncovered 400 packets of uncustomed Supermatch cigarettes, 14 packets of Oris cigarettes, cash in various denominations suspected to be proceeds from the illegal trade, and what is believed to be cannabis sativa (bhang).
Authorities say the cigarettes were smuggled into the country without customs clearance, violating tax and trade laws.
The suspects are being held at Oyugis Police Station as investigations continue.
In Kisii County, eight more suspects were arrested in Nyakongo Village, Kitutu Central Sub-county, in a separate operation involving NACADA, the National Police Service (NPS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the ANU.
During the raid, officers seized 134 brooms suspected to be laced with narcotic substances and two 90kg sacks filled with dried plant material believed to be bhang. The eight suspects are currently in custody as police prepare to take further legal action.
These arrests come just a month after authorities dismantled a major drug distribution network in Kisii linked to a well-known drug baron. NACADA says the latest operations show its continued commitment to breaking down drug networks across the country.
