The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a flood alert for at least 11 counties, warning of intensified rainfall over the next five days.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the department said rainfall is expected to persist across several parts of the country, with heavier downpours forecast between April 22 and April 27.

According to the Met Department, some areas—particularly the Coast, parts of the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands—could receive more than 20mm of rainfall within 24 hours. The rains may also be accompanied by strong winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s), while sea waves along the Coast are to rise above two metres.

Counties likely to be affected include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Garissa. Other areas at risk include parts of Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui and Makueni.

Residents in the affected regions have been urged to remain vigilant for possible flooding, flash floods and reduced visibility.

“Flood waters may occur in areas where it has not rained heavily, particularly downstream,” the department warned.

The agency advised the public to avoid walking or driving through flowing water, refrain from sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during storms, and exercise caution when engaging in maritime activities.
