Atheists In Kenya have come out to defend prostitutes in Nairobi following a law by city mcas seeking to have the trade banned.

Led by AIK chairman Harrison Mumia, the association has come out to defend prostitution saying it is no way illegal as long as the people involved in the practice are two consenting adults.

Mumia said legalizing of commercial sex will protect the sex workers from crimes such as sexual abuse, rape and sexual harassment.

He also said that the law passed by MCA’s is backward and violates human and civil rights of prostitutes as prostitution is a business just like any other.

“It is our firm’s position, therefore, that instead of banning prostitution, the National County Assembly should pass enabling legislation to facilitate the smooth running of brothels to enable the government to exercise more control over the sex industry,”Mumia said.

He also added that no law has ever succeeded to stop the practice in the past.

“No law has succeeded to stop the practice in the past, suggesting that the assembly should instead work on legalizing it,as commercial sex is a service industry like any other.”

The association also said that the ban was targeting women who are mostly the people engaging in the practice.

Adding her voice to the discourse, nominated Senator Millicent Omanga also slammed the City legislators terming the move as “impulsive and unfair to the poor commercial sex workers who depend on the trade for survival.”

“I demand that sex workers be given audience so that a proper solution is found, many do not do it because they enjoy but because they need to survive,” she said through a Facebook post.
