Journalist Peter Makori has accused Attorney general Githu Muigai and the state law office of extortion.
He said that he was awarded a sum of Sh5,053,671 in 2006 as compensation for torture and illegal imprisonment during President Daniel Moi’s reign. He has said that the money has since increased to Sh 12 million following accrued interests.

He has said that the office of the attorney general has asked him to forfeit the interest in order for him to receive his payment. They told him to accept Sh 7 million instead
“Ever since the AG’s office was served with the court order to pay, officials at the State Law Office have been demanding that I ‘negotiate’ the accrued interest. The officials wrote to me in the recent past, demanding I accept Sh7 million out of a possible Sh12 million,” said the journalist
Many of the people who were tortured during the Moi era who filed cases and won but failed to get their compensation as a result of delay in the office of the Attorney General.
Between 1994 and 2004, Peter Makori was detained eight times for stories he wrote .
