    Maria Sakkari, born on July 25, 1995, is a 29-year-old Greek professional tennis player.

    Inspired by her mother, a former top-50 player, she began playing tennis at age six, achieving a career-high ranking of world No. 3 in March 2022, and as of July 2024, she is ranked No. 8.

    Throughout her career, Sakkari has secured two WTA singles titles, including the 2019 Morocco Open and the 2023 Guadalajara Open, a WTA 1000 title.

    Maria has two siblings, an older brother named Yannis and a younger sister named Amanda. Amanda is four years younger than Maria.

    While the whole family has a connection to tennis, Amanda chose to explore other interests and is pursuing a Masters in Media Management at The New School in Manhattan.

    Maria enjoys spending time with her siblings, appreciating the little things like going to Whole Foods together. Yannis has also accompanied her to tournaments, showing their support for her career.

    Sakkari’s career began on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour in 2010, a crucial starting point for emerging players.

    During this time, she focused on gaining ranking points and experience, securing seven singles and five doubles titles, with a notable win at the $75k Dubai Tennis Challenge in doubles in 2015.

    Sakkari then transitioned to the WTA Tour, gradually improving her game and earning her first significant WTA title at the Morocco Open in 2019, a turning point that boosted her confidence.

    The year 2021 was a defining one for Sakkari, marked by historic runs at the Grand Slam tournaments.

    She reached the semifinals of both the French Open and the US Open, becoming the first Greek woman to achieve this milestone, showcasing her resilience and competitive spirit.

    Her success in 2021 earned her a spot at the year-end WTA Finals, another first for a Greek female player.

    Building on this momentum, Sakkari reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3 in March 2022.

    In September 2023, she won her maiden WTA 1000 title at the Guadalajara Open, demonstrating her ability to win against top players.

    Despite these successes, Sakkari faced inconsistencies at the Grand Slams in 2023, highlighting the challenges of maintaining peak performance.

    Recognized for her progress, Sakkari was named the WTA Most Improved Player in 2020 and the WTA Sportswoman of the Year in Greece in 2021.

    She has secured two WTA singles titles: the Guadalajara Open and the 2019 Morocco Open. Additionally, she reached the semifinals of the 2020 Ostrava Open.

    Sakkari has also proudly represented Greece in the Olympic Games and various other international competitions.

    In September 2021, she broke into the top 10, becoming the first Greek female player to reach that milestone. Her singles career record includes 462 wins and 300 losses, giving her a win percentage of 60.6%.
