A police officer shot and killed his colleague in an argument outside a club in Ruaraka area, Nairobi.

The deceased was identified as Raphael Wambua and was attached to the Central Bank of Kenya.

He was from the General Service Unit.

The assailant is attached to the VIP protection unit and was seconded to a Chief Executive Officer of a blue chip company in the country.

The two are said to have argued as they left the club on Saturday night before the assailant reached to his pistol and fatally shot Wambua.

The assailant officer was later rescued and arrested and detained pending investigations.

This is after a mob attacked him as he escaped the scene.

The deceased was in the company of a relative at the time of the incident.

The body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

It is not clear what triggered the argument that turned fatal.

The incident could be linked to the growing trend of trauma in the service.

A section of police officers are facing growing pressure of trauma.

Officials say police are generally on the receiving end of all community problems.

They are expected to maintain law and order in very difficult situations, besides putting their lives at risk.

Over the years, a spike in deaths in the service has been linked to trauma.

As part of efforts to address the trend, police authorities have launched counselling services and the National Police Service Commission has established a unit and staffed it to attend to their demanding situation.

The counselling unit will, among other things, evaluate, design and lead an outreach programme that helps prevent mental health and substance abuse.

At least three suicide cases involving police officers are recorded every month.

Meanwhile, the traffic commander for Embakasi Division in Nairobi succumbed to injuries in hospital following an accident along Mombasa Road, Nairobi.

Police said the commander was trying to stop a speeding car as a presidential motorcade when he was hit and overrun.

He was among dozens of police officers deployed to man the road as President William Ruto’s motorcade raced towards Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on February 7 evening when the incident happened.

A speeding car approached as the motorcade arrived forcing the commander identified as Obala to jump onto the road to stop it.

He was hit and overrun by the car. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

The driver of the killer car was later arrested and arraigned as investigations go on.
