The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, presided over the inauguration of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Pending Medical Claims Verification Committee at Afya House in Nairobi, Monday.

The Committee, established through Kenya Gazette notice on March 28, 2025, is tasked with reviewing and verifying medical claims that were submitted to NHIF between July 1, 2022, and September 30, 2024.

The team will also advise the Ministry of Health on how to settle the verified claims and handle related responsibilities.

In his address, Duale expressed confidence in the Committee’s ability to perform its duties and emphasized the importance of a thorough and fair review of all pending claims.

He highlighted that although the Government is aware of the financial challenges faced by some healthcare providers, the verification process must be guided by transparency, accountability, and value for money.

“This Committee is a critical step towards restoring public trust in our health financing system. We must ensure that every shilling spent results in meaningful health outcomes, supporting the Government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” said Duale.

Committee Chairperson James Masiro acknowledged the scale and urgency of the task, assuring the Ministry that the team would work diligently to meet the set deadlines.

He stressed the importance of teamwork, professionalism, and integrity in the process, emphasizing the need to maintain public trust.

“We understand that the success of this process depends on our ability to work collaboratively and uphold the highest standards of professionalism. We are fully committed to earning and maintaining the trust placed in us,” Masiro said.

Duale was joined by Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai (Medical Services), Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Social Health Authority Acting CEO Robert Ingasira, and SHA Chairperson Mr. Abdi Mohamed, along with other Ministry officials and Committee members.
