The Farmers Party has announced plans to stage a peaceful protest on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the Deputy President’s official residence in Karen, demanding the reinstatement of Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President.
In a letter dated Monday, May 12, 2025, addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the party’s Executive Director George Wakibi Njogu formally notified the police of the planned demonstration and requested security.
“We humbly request you to provide us with security tomorrow as we carry out this democratic and constitutional duty. We look forward to a peaceful procession with guaranteed security and peace for all those within and around the procession routes,” the letter reads in part.
This move follows a recent court ruling that declared the process used to impeach Gachagua flawed.
The court noted that only the Chief Justice has the authority to form a bench of four judges to hear such a matter, raising questions about the legitimacy of the proceedings that removed Gachagua from office in 2024.
Then Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki later took over the Deputy President’s role.
Gachagua, who was elected Deputy President alongside President William Ruto in 2022, officially resigned from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Monday, May 12, 2025.
In his resignation letter to the party’s Secretary-General, Gachagua said UDA no longer represents the interests of the Kenyan people.
“By copy of this letter, you are notified that I have officially resigned from UDA Party with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
He accused the party of abandoning its original values and failing to deliver on its promises to the nation. Gachagua described UDA as “the most dangerous political movement” in Kenya and criticized President Ruto for misleading the public with an unfulfilled manifesto.
He cited several failed sectors including agriculture, MSMEs, affordable housing, healthcare, the digital superhighway, and the creative economy. He also claimed that education, social protection, and the women’s agenda have been neglected despite being key campaign pledges.
Gachagua is expected to launch his own political party later this month. He has already aligned himself with opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i. Over the weekend, the leaders vowed to work together and front a single presidential candidate against President Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
