Mark Harmon, born Thomas Mark Harmon on September 2, 1951, in Burbank, California, is an American actor, producer, and former college football player.
The youngest of three children, Harmon was born to a family already steeped in fame.
His father, Tom Harmon, was a Heisman Trophy-winning football player and sports broadcaster, while his mother, Elyse Knox, was an actress, model, and artist.
Harmon’s early life was shaped by his parents’ high-profile careers, though he has often shared that he didn’t fully grasp their celebrity status as a child.
After excelling as a quarterback at UCLA, where he earned a National Football Foundation Award for All-Round Excellence, Harmon chose acting over a potential career in professional football or law.
Siblings
Mark has two older sisters, Kristin Nelson and Kelly Harmon, both of whom followed creative paths in the entertainment industry, influenced by their parents’ legacies.
Kristin Nelson, born Sharon Kristin Harmon on June 25, 1945, was an actress, painter, and author who gained recognition for her role on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet after marrying teen idol Ricky Nelson in 1963.
Her marriage to Nelson, which lasted until their divorce in 1982, produced four children, including actress Tracy Nelson and musicians Matthew and Gunnar Nelson.
Kristin’s life was marked by personal struggles, including substance abuse, which led to a highly publicized custody battle in 1987 when Mark and his wife, Pam Dawber, sought custody of Kristin’s youngest son, Sam, citing concerns about her parenting due to drug dependency.
The dispute strained their relationship, though they later reached an agreement allowing Kristin to retain custody with Mark granted visitation rights.
Kristin passed away on April 27, 2018, at the age of 72 from a heart attack.
Kelly Harmon, born Kelly Jean Harmon on November 9, 1948, also pursued a career in acting and modeling, appearing in television shows such as Battlestar Galactica, CHiPs, and Bay City Blues.
She became widely recognized as a commercial spokesperson for Tic Tac mints and later transitioned into a successful career in interior design, founding Kelly Harmon Designs.
Kelly was briefly married to automotive executive John DeLorean from 1969 to 1972 before marrying Bob Miller in 1984.

Career
Harmon’s acting career spans over five decades, beginning with small roles in the 1970s and evolving into leading parts in major television series and films.
His first acting gig came through family connections, appearing as a gorilla in an episode of Ozzie’s Girls, a show tied to his sister Kristin’s in-laws, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson.
Early guest roles on shows like Adam-12, Police Woman, and Emergency! laid the groundwork for his breakout performance in the 1977 TV movie Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years, which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor.
Harmon gained further recognition in the 1980s as Dr. Robert Caldwell on St. Elsewhere, a role that showcased his ability to portray complex characters, including one of the first major TV characters to contract AIDS, challenging societal misconceptions at the time.
His portrayal of serial killer Ted Bundy in the 1986 TV movie The Deliberate Stranger highlighted his versatility, blending charm with menace.
Harmon’s most iconic role came in 2003 when he began playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, a role he held until 2021, making him a central figure in one of television’s most successful procedural dramas.
His stoic, principled Gibbs became a cultural touchstone, and Harmon also served as an executive producer on the series and its prequel, NCIS: Origins.
Beyond NCIS, Harmon starred in films like Summer School, Freaky Friday, and Chasing Liberty, and appeared in a four-episode arc on The West Wing in 2002, earning another Emmy nomination.
Accolades
Harmon received two Emmy nominations: one in 1977 for Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years and another in 2002 for his guest role as Secret Service agent Simon Donovan on The West Wing.
His role as Gibbs on NCIS earned him three People’s Choice Award nominations for Favorite TV Crime Drama Actor, cementing his status as a fan favorite.
In 1986, Harmon was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” a testament to his charisma and widespread popularity during the height of his St. Elsewhere fame.
In 2012, he received the 2,482nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honoring his decades-long impact on the entertainment industry.
Beyond awards, Harmon’s real-life heroics—such as rescuing two teenagers from a burning car in 1996 near his Brentwood home—have added to his reputation as a figure of integrity and courage, both on and off the screen.
