A catholic priest was trailed and robbed of Sh200,000 after he had withdrawn the same from a bank in Bungoma Town.

The incident happened in Musikoma area, Bungoma County, police said.

The priest attached to Indangalasia Parish in Kakamega had on June 9 driven to the bank in Bungoma town and withdrawn the cash for use.

He said he placed the cash on he co-driver’s seat in his Toyota Hilux car before hitting the road from Bungoma to Mumias.

He told police he stopped his car in Musikoma area near a vocational bookshop for shopping. It was then another car that had been trailing him pulled there and one of the occupants walked out armed with a weapon.

The said occupant broke the window on the co-driver’s seat and grabbed the bag that contained the cash before dashing back to their car.

Police said the car drove off towards Mumias and efforts to trace it are ongoing. Police suspect the gang had information on the transactions

This is the latest such incident to happen in the recent days where people are attacked and robbed of cash moments after leaving banks.

The trend has been worrying amid calls to tame the same.

Last month, another victim was robbed of Sh307,000 money he was to pay construction workers in Kitengela. He was robbed by people posing as police officers.

Another man was robbed of nearly Sh1 million after leaving a bank in Machakos Town. No arrests have been made so far.

Another one was robbed Sh7 million in the city centre after leaving a bank. Past investigations have linked such incidents to rogue bank staff who leak information to thugs about transactions of their clients.

Investigations have also been linked to prior information from the clients’ side of the attacks.

Other thugs stay in banks pretending to be customers with an aim of noticing those withdrawing money for attacks, police say.
