At least 21 people were Friday killed in a road accident in Kisumu Town.

Police said the victims were mourners who were traveling in a school bus when the vehicle crashed and overturned at the Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu on Friday evening on the busy Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

The bus, belonging to AIC Naki High School, was travelling from Kakamega to Kisumu when the accident occurred at around 5 p.m, police said.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina said the driver of the bus lost its control as it approached the roundabout at high speed, crossed into the opposite lane, and plunged into a ditch.
“Among the deceased are 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl,” said Maina.

The bus was ferrying passengers from a funeral.

At least five people sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment, while 15 others among them a child suffered minor injuries, police said.

The crash has sent shockwaves through the region, sparking renewed calls for stricter safety measures, particularly in school transport.

The incident comes a day after another one claimed nine lives in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

Police said the bus belonged to Kenya Pipeline Company and was ferrying workers within the Morendat Training and Conference Centre (MTCC) in the Morendat area of Naivasha, Nakuru County when the accident happened on Thursday evening.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said of the dead four were from Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) staff from Morendat Training and Conference Centre and five staff from a contracted cleaning service provider in a tragic road accident.

The bus was ferrying 32 members of staff who were getting off the morning shift.

Following the tragic accident, those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, while those in critical condition were evacuated to Nairobi to receive specialized care.

Witnesses said the accident could have been caused by poor visibility as it was raining heavily when the accident occurred.

Kenya Railways said in a statement the accident happened at a railway level crossing.

“Motorists and the general public are advised to take caution when crossing the railway line at level crossings to avoid collision with approaching trains,” said a statement.

Fatal accidents are common on Kenyan roads with more than 4,000 being killed annually.
