Rainer Schüttler is a German former professional tennis player born on 25 April 1976 in Korbach, West Germany.
He turned professional in 1995 and competed on the ATP Tour until his retirement in 2012.
Known for his baseline game, fighting spirit, and strong movement, Schüttler stands 1.80 metres tall and played right-handed with a two-handed backhand.
After his playing career, he moved into coaching, tournament organisation, and team leadership roles, including captaining Germany’s Billie Jean King Cup team.
He resides primarily in Switzerland with his wife Jovana and their two sons.
Siblings
Rainer has one sibling, a sister named Marita. His parents are Karl and Klara Schüttler.
Family photos from the early 2000s occasionally show the Schüttler family together, including Marita alongside Rainer and their parents.
The family maintains roots in Hessen, Germany, and Schüttler has spoken of returning there for holidays and gatherings that include his sister and extended relatives.
Career
Schüttler began playing tennis at the age of nine and turned professional in 1995. He steadily climbed the rankings through the late 1990s and early 2000s.
His breakthrough year arrived in 2003, when he reached the final of the Australian Open after defeating high-calibre opponents including Andy Roddick.

He ultimately lost the final in straight sets to Andre Agassi.
That same season, he advanced to the fourth round of the other three Grand Slam tournaments.
This made him the first German since Boris Becker in 1989 to reach the fourth round at all four majors in one year.
In 2004, he peaked at world No. 5 and reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters.
Four years later, he produced another career highlight by reaching the Wimbledon semifinals.
His run included a marathon five-set victory over Arnaud Clément in which he saved a match point.
Schüttler also competed for Germany in the Davis Cup from 1999 to 2009 and appeared at three Olympic Games.
He captured four ATP singles titles and four doubles titles during his career.
He earned more than $7.4 million in prize money before retiring in October 2012.
Accolades
Schüttler’s most prominent individual achievement was reaching the 2003 Australian Open final, the last time a German man has contested a Grand Slam singles final.
He won an Olympic silver medal in men’s doubles at the 2004 Athens Games, partnering Nicolas Kiefer.
Schüttler was named ATP Most Improved Player of the Year in 2003 and ATP Comeback Player of the Year in 2008.
His career-high ranking of world No. 5, attained in April 2004, remains a landmark for German tennis of that era.
Additional recognition includes the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award, which was presented after his Olympic silver medal.
He also served as president of the ATP Player Council.
