Thomas Mario “Tommy” Haas, born on April 3, 1978, in Hamburg, Germany, is a former professional tennis player who competed on the ATP Tour from 1996 until his retirement in 2018.
The son of Austrian-born former European judo champion and tennis coach Peter Haas and German mother Brigitte Haas, he began hitting balls with a wooden plank as a young child and later trained seriously under his father’s guidance.
At age 11 he moved to Florida to attend the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, eventually becoming a dual German-American citizen in 2010 while continuing to represent Germany in competition.
After retiring he has served as tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and pursued business and philanthropic interests.
Siblings
Tommy has two sisters, Sabine and Karin.
Sabine Haas, born April 24, 1975, is the older sibling and also pursued tennis competitively.
She and Tommy both achieved success at the German junior championships, which helped draw the attention of coach Nick Bollettieri and led to the family relocating so the siblings could train at his Florida academy.
Sabine reached a career-high ranking near 280 on the women’s tour before retiring in the late 1990s; in a 1999 newspaper piece she described her brother’s early self-belief, competitive drive, and the sibling rivalry that pushed him to improve, noting that their father supported Tommy’s ambitions particularly strongly.
Karin Haas, born June 16, 1979, is the younger sister.

Career
Haas turned professional in 1996 and quickly established himself as a consistent top player. He broke into the top 10 in 1999 after strong results that included a semifinal run at the Australian Open.
In 2000 he captured the silver medal in singles at the Sydney Olympics.
The following year he won four titles, including his sole Masters 1000 crown at the Stuttgart Masters.
He climbed to a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in May 2002 after reaching the final of the Rome Masters.
Injuries, including a significant shoulder problem that left him unranked in 2003, interrupted his progress, yet he staged notable comebacks, returning to the top 10 and later climbing as high as No. 11 in 2013 at age 35.
Across his career he compiled 15 singles titles from 28 finals, recorded more than 560 match wins, reached the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slam events (three Australian Open semifinals, one Wimbledon semifinal, and three US Open quarterfinals), and notched multiple victories over top rivals including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi.
He retired formally in 2018 after a final season that included an ATP-level win at age 39.
Accolades
Haas’s most prominent honors include the Olympic silver medal in singles at the 2000 Sydney Games and the 2001 Stuttgart Masters title.
He was named ATP Comeback Player of the Year in both 2004 and 2012 for successful returns from ranking absences caused by injury.
Reaching world No. 2 in 2002 stands as a career peak, complemented by eight seasons finished inside the top 20 and a year-end best of No. 8 in 2001.
His 15 ATP singles titles, longevity spanning more than two decades, and ability to contend at major tournaments despite physical setbacks further define his record.
He also contributed to Germany’s team successes, including World Team Cup titles.
