Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has alleged that there are plans to attack him ahead of the burial of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement shared on his social media pages, Babu said he is aware of those behind the alleged plot and urged for peace during the funeral period.
“There are plans to attack me on or before the day of Baba’s burial. I am aware of the culprits behind the scheme. It is my prayer that we give Baba the befitting send-off that he deserves, devoid of unwarranted violence,” Babu wrote.
The outspoken legislator, who has recently expressed his ambition to become Nairobi governor, has been a visible figure during the mourning period, helping to calm emotional crowds.
On Thursday, when mourners overpowered security officers at Parliament Buildings during the public viewing of Raila’s body, Babu was among those who stepped in to restore order.
The public viewing, initially scheduled for Parliament, was later moved to Kasarani Stadium, where thousands of mourners turned up. However, the event was marred by chaos that left at least two people dead after police reportedly opened fire and lobbed tear gas to control the crowds.
In Kisumu, the venue for the public viewing was also changed from Moi Stadium to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium to accommodate the large number of mourners expected to attend.
Raila’s body is set to arrive in Kisumu tomorrow for public viewing before being taken to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, for burial on Sunday.
According to the Funeral Committee, chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, an update on the final arrangements will be issued this evening.
The burial plans have been fast-tracked to honour Raila’s wishes to be laid to rest within 72 hours of his death.
