    Suspect dies by suicide at police cells in Vihiga

    The Independent Policing Oversight Authority and police are investigating an incident where a suspect died by suicide at the Emusire police station cells, Emuhaya, Vihiga County.

    The suspect had been arrested and brought to the station by his family before being detained in the cells.

    Police identified the victim as Reegan Matende, 41. He was found dead on January 3 at night hours after being detained.

    Police said Matende had been brought to the station by his family for creating disturbance at his home. He was detained at about 9 pm.

    He was alone in the cells. The police on duty went to check on him hours later and found his body hanging on the grills of the cells with a t shirt tied around his neck.

    It is not clear what motivated him to die by suicide. The body was moved to the mortuary pending other investigations, police said.

    Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority are also investigating an incident where a suspect died while in custody after complaining of stomach pain at the Kinangop police station.

    Joseph Maina Karanja who was arrested for the offence of breaking into a building and committing a felony had pleaded guilty to the charge and was remanded for 14 days till January 14, 2026 for mention.

    On January 1, he developed complications and complained of stomach pain and was rushed to Engineer Sub County hospital where he died while undergoing treatment
Police said they are yet to know the cause of the death and the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

    Police informed IPOA about the incident and officials launched further probe, jointly.

    And police are investigating an incident where a woman died after jumping from the second floor of a building in Kasarani area, Nairobi.

    Police said the victim identified as Monicah Wanjiru Wangombe, 20 was a food vendor in the area.

    The body had visible injuries in the head believed to have been caused by the fall when the police arrived at the scene and picked it up to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

    Police said they believe she died by suicide but they were yet to establish the motive.
