Security teams have been put on high alert after gunmen believed to be al Shabaab militants shot at a police camp in Khorof Harar, Wajir County.

The incident happened on Saturday night at the Khorof Harar QRU camp where the gunmen shot Rocket Propelled Grenades and several bullets using AK47 rifles.

Police on duty responded and managed to repulse the gang. Local security agents said the gang had divided themselves into two groups as they fired on the camp.

The gang took cover and returned to the scene an hour later before they were repulsed by the team.

No casualties were reported in the drama, police said of the incident believed to be out to probe the alertness of the security agencies in the area.

It is the second incident to happen in the area after another one where the gang probed Fino Special Operations Group camp in Mandera.

They did this by firing one RPG round. Officials said the team on the ground responded and successfully repulsed the attackers.

Intelligence reports show the terrorists are roaming the area with an intention of staging attacks on security agencies.

Security agencies continue to enhance operations along the Kenya-Somalia border to avert continued attempts by the al-Shabaab militia to infiltrate the country.

In Mandera’s Kamoor area, a second government vehicle was robbed from a driver by the militants on January 2. The Land Cruiser was driven towards the main Kenya-Somalia border after the driver was forced off the steering at gunpoint.

This happened as the gang clashed with security agencies in the neighbouring

Earlier on, a police officer was shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in an ambush in Diff, Wajir County.

Police said the officer was on January 2 fighting for his life in a hospital after being shot by the suspected al Shabaab gunmen at Diff Shopping Centre on New Year Day.

They grabbed his official police vehicle and drove off after forcing him out.

The police constable driver was ambushed by assailants armed with AK-47 rifles, believed to be al-Shabaab militia.

Witnesses and police said the officer was driving an official Toyota Land Cruiser within Diff township when he attempted to make a U-turn.

It was at that moment that the attackers opened fire, shooting him in the chest and mouth, with one bullet reportedly exiting through his mouth.

The attackers were using a white, numberless Toyota Probox and were four in number. Two staged the attack as the others remained in the waiting car, witnesses and police said.

After shooting the officer, the gang robbed him of the police vehicle and fled towards Hambalash Road near the Kenya-Somalia border.

The injured officer was rushed to the hospital for specialized treatment. Police said they were pursuing the matter. The Land Cruiser belonging to the local police command is now believed to be in Somalia.

This has left the local officials without an official police car. These are the latest such incidents to happen. A number of police vehicles have been robbed in the border region and driven to Somali by the militia.

Efforts are being made to recover the vehicles.
