The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recorded statements from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri, and seven passengers who were travelling in a Climax bus involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DCI said investigations into the December 13, 2025 crash at Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway are ongoing and remain comprehensive.

The probe follows an earlier update released on January 5, 2026.

According to the DCI, detectives have so far recorded statements from 28 individuals as part of the inquiry, including seven passengers from the ill-fated bus who voluntarily presented themselves to assist investigators.

Among those who have recorded statements is Speaker Wetang’ula, who did so voluntarily in the early stages of the investigation.

Statements have also been taken from Senator Khaniri and his wife, Eunice Chelagat, both of whom are described as close associates of the late Jirongo.

The DCI noted that Khaniri and Jirongo’s wife visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and helped facilitate the transfer of Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.

Investigators further disclosed that a post-mortem examination established that Jirongo sustained severe crush injuries.

The autopsy revealed a broken sternum, crush chest injuries, and lacerations to the heart, liver and kidneys.

The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma.

The DCI emphasized that the inquiry has been wide-ranging, involving analysis of information obtained from multiple sources, and assured the public that once investigations are complete, the file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for appropriate action.

At the same time, the agency urged media outlets, political leaders and members of the public to exercise restraint, warning against speculation or unsubstantiated claims that could prejudice the investigation, cause public anxiety or unfairly damage the reputations of individuals who have cooperated with detectives.

“The DCI remains committed to conducting impartial, thorough and expeditious investigations in strict accordance with the law,” the statement said.
