Two Chinese nationals and their Kenyan driver were allegedly robbed of Sh3.9 million after a group of men posing as police officers intercepted their vehicle along the Nairobi-Keroka road in Nyamira County.
The incident was reported on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
According to police, the victims were travelling through the Mekenene area when they were overtaken by a Toyota Probox decorated with flowers resembling those used on vehicles heading to a wedding.
The Probox allegedly forced the victims’ blue BMW to stop.
Two men reportedly alighted from the Probox carrying what appeared to be walkie-talkies. The driver is said to have stopped after believing the men were police officers.
The suspects allegedly attacked the occupants by kicking them before taking Sh3.9 million in cash, a Huawei mobile phone valued at Sh50,000, personal belongings worth about Sh200,000 and company documents described as confidential.
The victims also lost their identification cards and other credentials during the robbery.
Police have launched investigations and circulated details of the suspects’ vehicle to other stations, asking officers to be on the lookout for the Toyota Probox and take appropriate action if the suspects are identified or arrested.
Police suspect the incident happened out of an inside job. A team has been set up to pursue the matter.
The team interrogated the victims as part of the probe into the incident. There has been a slight rise in such incidents where gunmen target victims and rob them after leaving banks. Others are usually targeted and robbed of their cash which they leave in cars after leaving the banks.
Police say they are pursuing the gangs behind the trend.
