Recce gets boost as 495 new GSU officers join specialised unit

The General Service Unit (GSU) Recce Tactical Sub Unit received the largest share of officers from the latest batch of recruits deployed to the specialised police formation.

A total of 495 of the 2,446 officers who recently completed GSU training have been posted to the Recce unit as the National Police Service moves to strengthen its operational capacity.

President William Ruto presided over the passing-out parade at the National Police College, Embakasi ‘B’ Campus, on Friday, marking the deployment of the officers to various GSU formations across the country.

The deployment comes amid efforts to address manpower requirements arising from retirements, transfers and movement of officers to other formations, while maintaining specialised capabilities for high-risk security operations.

The Recce Tactical Sub Unit has a specialised mandate that includes counter-terrorism, hostage rescue and other high-risk interventions. It also incorporates specialised functions such as the Crisis Response Team and Sky Marshal operations.

The Sky Marshal team provides security aboard commercial aircraft, while the Crisis Response Team is maintained for rapid deployment during emergencies requiring specialised tactical intervention.

Recce personnel have previously been deployed during major security incidents, including the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi and the Garissa University attack.

The 495 officers posted to Recce will, however, undergo a further six-month specialised training and hardening programme before qualifying for full deployment within the unit. Officials indicated that a significant number of those selected could fall out during the demanding course.

The other GSU formations also received new personnel.

The Headquarters Operations Sub Unit received 86 officers, while the Presidential Guard Sub Unit was allocated 50. The National Police College Embakasi ‘B’ Campus received 77 officers.

The 20 alphabetically designated GSU field companies received between 75 and 104 officers each. Victor Company received the highest allocation at 104 officers, followed by Delta with 100 and Hotel with 94.

Sierra received the lowest allocation at 75 officers, while Bravo, Charlie and Mike each received 78.

The GSU field companies are deployed across the country and serve as second-level responders when security situations require reinforcement beyond the capacity of regular police formations.

Their deployments are rotated periodically, with officers generally transferred between locations every one or two years depending on operational requirements.

GSU personnel also provide security for State House, state lodges and other designated government installations. The Presidential Escort Unit separately handles the movement and close protection of the President and his family, working alongside local police formations when required.

During his address to the new officers, Ruto reminded them that the GSU has a specialised role in responding to terrorism, banditry, emergencies, threats to vital installations and other high-risk security situations.

He also urged the officers to remain politically impartial ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“The duty of the police is to secure this democratic space impartially. Political leaders must not draw the police into partisan contests, incite violence, or ask officers to carry out unlawful instructions,” Ruto said.

The President also highlighted the significance of the GSU’s distinctive red beret.

“The red beret is a pledge to defend. Wear it with pride, but earn its honour through your conduct,” he said.

The recruits underwent nine months of training at the National Police College, Embakasi, and the Field Training Camp in Magadi before being posted to their respective commands.

The latest deployment is expected to increase GSU manpower at a time when the service continues to balance routine deployments with specialised responses to terrorism, banditry, critical infrastructure threats and other national security emergencies.
