    Early Life

    Guillaume Canet was born on April 10, 1973, in Boulogne-Billancourt, an affluent suburb of Paris, France. Raised in a family of horse breeders, he originally planned a career in professional show jumping and competed as a member of the junior French National Equestrian Team.

    After suffering a serious fall from a horse, Canet shifted his focus to acting and enrolled at the prestigious Cours Florent drama school, setting the foundation for his future in cinema.

    Career Beginnings

    Canet began his professional acting career in 1994 on stage, appearing in the Théâtre Hébertot production of La Ville dont le prince est un enfant. He soon transitioned into television commercials, series, and short films, including Fils unique, gradually gaining recognition in the French entertainment industry.

    Film Career

    Guillaume Canet made his feature film debut in 1997 with the thriller Barracuda. He quickly gained momentum with roles in Sentimental Education, Ceux qui m’aiment prendront le train, and En plein cœur, the latter earning him a César Award nomination.

    In 2000, Canet gained international exposure after appearing in Danny Boyle’s The Beach alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. He followed this with roles in Fidelity, Vidocq, Le Frère du guerrier, and Mille millièmes, establishing himself as a versatile leading man.

    Transition to Directing

    Canet made his directorial debut in 2002 with Whatever You Say, which he also co-wrote and starred in. The film received two César nominations, including Best First Feature.

    His breakthrough as a filmmaker came in 2006 with the neo-noir thriller Tell No One, a critical and commercial success that won four César Awards, including Best Director. The film significantly boosted both his reputation and earnings.

    Outside of film, Canet is a competitive show jumper. Between 2012 and 2017, he participated in more than 600 competitions, winning 33 events and placing at major international shows in Paris, Chantilly, and La Baule.

    Personal Life

    Guillaume Canet married German actress and model Diane Kruger in 2001; the couple divorced in 2006. He later dated Carla Bruni and Élodie Navarre.

    Since 2007, Canet has been in a long-term relationship with Marion Cotillard. The couple has two children, a son named Marcel and a daughter named Louise, and they frequently collaborate on film projects.
