The National Economic Development Party (NEDP) distanced itself from the withdrawal of its candidate in the upcoming Isiolo South by-election, maintaining that the decision was made in an individual capacity and not by the party.

The development comes just a day after the party concluded an intense three-day campaign tour in the constituency ahead of the February 26, 2026 by-election.

It was a blow to former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko and NEDP Party as their candidate Isack Abduba Fayo withdrew from the Isiolo South by election in support of UDA’s candidate Tubi Mohamed.

He was pictured with president William Ruto at State House as his team was busy campaigning on the ground.

Opinion polls also indicated he was leading in the race with few days to the mini polls.
The party termed the move a betrayal.

In a strongly worded statement, the party clarified that it had not stepped down from the race, emphasizing that its commitment to the people of Isiolo South and the wider North Eastern region remains firm.

“The position of the party is clear. NEDP did not step down; the candidate did so in his individual capacity,” the statement read.

The party further underscored its stance on democratic principles, warning against what it described as attempts to commercialize the electoral process.

“Democracy is not for sale. It is not a commodity to be bought with money, manipulated by influence, or traded for short-term gain. Our voices, our votes and our future belong to the Kenyan people, not the highest bidder,” the party stated.

NEDP said it stands for integrity, transparency and accountable leadership, insisting that no amount of money can replace the will of an informed and united electorate.

The party also reassured residents of Isiolo South of its continued solidarity despite the unexpected turn of events.

“To the good people of Isiolo South, we are with you,” the statement concluded.

The February 26, 2026 by-election is expected to attract heightened political attention as parties intensify their campaigns in the run-up to the vote.
