A Tanzanian activist was rescued and rushed to the hospital following a failed abduction incident along the Mombasa highway in Lukenya area, Machakos County.

The incident happened on February 22, 2026, and involved one Mashambaha Hamsa.

He had dropped out of a moving car after a struggle inside, witnesses said.

The locals called police as the other occupants of the four-wheel-drive car sped towards Kyumvi where it was intercepted.

Three occupants who included a Tanzanian national were arrested and driven back to the scene where the activist had been dropped.

Hamsa works for a local advocacy agency Change for Africa Trust.

A search in the car resulted in the recovery of alcohol, two syringes and salt, police said.

The victim was taken to the hospital and revealed he had been lured to the car by a person known to him for a meat eating session in Athi River.

While on the way to the site, he was strangled with a belt as he sat on the co-driver’s seat.

He added, the attackers tried to inject him with a substance using a syringe but were unable due to the scuffle that broke out in the car.

It was then that he managed to open the car and dropped off as it moved towards Machakos where it was later intercepted.

Police said they were alerted by witnesses who said a man who they suspected had been stupefied had been dropped off prompting the search and subsequent interception.

The three suspects were Monday expected in court to face charges at Mavoko, police said.

The motive of the three was not immediately known.

Meanwhile, 45 revelers were arrested for fighting and causing damage at a resort in Lukenya, Machakos County.

The group had been meeting for events when they differed over women. This broke out into a fight using beer bottles and seats. Police were called to the resort on Sunday morning and managed to arrest 45 people for the chaos. They were detained pending interrogation and possible arraignment. Witnesses said most of the arrested persons were drunk then.
